How to Install a Wet Room on a Concrete Floor

Wet rooms can be installed in almost any space in the home, on both timber and solid bases. A large bathroom can be converted into a spacious open plan wet room with a bath and a walk-in shower area, while a smaller space can easily be turned into a compact wet room. Orbry wet rooms can be installed on a concrete floor, and in this blog post we will talk you through how to do this.

Firstly you will need to make sure that the screed is deep enough to accommodate the depth of both the tray and the drain. Draw a simple plan of the wet room including the position of the shower tray and drain, measure the room and note down all of the measurements. Place the tray in position and mark around it on the floor.

The concrete floor will need to be excavated to the depth of the tray – either 30mm or 24mm depending on the type of shower tray you are installing. This depth will also be affected by the type of waterproofing you are using, and whether you are installing underfloor heating – make sure to check all of these measurements before you start excavating. Place the tray in the recess and mark the position of the drain, then remove the tray.

You will also need to excavate a recess for the drain. Measure and mark the size and shape of the drain, then excavate this area. Use a self-levelling compound to level the excavated area, using polystyrene in place of the pipework. Apply sealing agent to the drain outlet and attach the 2″ connection collar, then connect the drain to the waste pipe – make sure the top of the drain is level and centred. Once the solvent is dry pour some water into the drain to test the outflow and check for leaks. Set the drain and waste pipe into a sand and cement bed, ensuring the drain is set to the right height.

Next you need to install the shower tray. Spread a suitable tile adhesive evenly over the area where the tray will sit, being careful to remove any from the drain. Generously apply silicone lubricant around the rubber O-ring on the drain. Apply a continuous wave of silicone sealant along the wall side edges of the tray and press into position. Place both hands through the hole in the tray and squeeze the tray and drain together until they click into place – do not pull too sharply to you may damage the shower tray. Check the edges of the tray are level using a spirit level, then leave to dry.

Once the tray is installed you can waterproof the rest of the floor using your chosen method.
