Waterproofing Joints With Orbry Waterproof Tape
When waterproofing any wet area it is extremely important to make sure the whole space is watertight. Whether it’s a fully tanked wet room, or a wet area in a shower, kitchen or utility room, even a small leak will cause costly damage. Waterproof tile backer boards and tanking membranes take care of larger spaces, but waterproof tape is needed to cover the joints between these to ensure the area is fully watertight.
At Orbry we offer two options when it comes to waterproof tape: Self-Adhesive Waterproof Tape, or a combination of Waterproof Tape and Sealing Compound. Self-Adhesive Waterproof Tape is a quick and easy solution for sealing joints between Orbry Boards on the walls. For more complicated joints, and jointing areas on the floor, for example around shower trays, we would recommend the Waterproof Tape and Sealing Compound combination.
To install the Self-Adhesive Waterproof Tape, you first need to cut the tape to the length that you require. Peel off the two backing release tapes by around 25mm, then fix the self-adhesive part at your starting point. Use one hand to pull the back tape whilst smoothing the tape in place with your other hand. If fixing to an internal corner, stick one side of the tape all the way down before starting on the other side. A clean float trowel can be used to work the tape into the corner if you find this easier.
When fixing the Waterproof Tape and Sealing Compound, you also need to start by cutting the tape to the correct length. Brush the compound over the area to be waterproofed and place the tape over it, scrim side down. Use a float trowel or roller to press the tape into the compound, making sure no air voids remain. Apply a coat of the Sealing Compound over the tape, then allow 12 hours for the compound to cure before tiling.
